ABOUT US
SCL Ingegneria Strutturale (SCL) is an engineering company operating in national and international contexts since 1992. SCL is involved in the fields of structural, civil, industrial and infrastructural engineering, including logistics facilities.
As part of his organization, SCL has created SCL Log, the Logistics Department.
SCL Log provides consulting and design services for logistic facilities: industrial and commercial racks, automatic and clad racks warehouses, floors, mezzanines, industrial buildings.
SCL is an independent engineering company, not a manufacturer or seller of racking systems, nor provides maintenance services.
SCL services are all under the liability of engineers enrolled in the Italian National registers with high proven experience and expertise on structures for logistics.

WAREHOUSES SAFETY
TECHNICAL INSPECTIONS
The European Norm EN 15635 requires that experienced and competent personnel carry out inspections in the warehouses to verify the safety of the racks and of the whole working environment.
The warehouse owner needs "expert inspections” to fulfill the requirements for the regular verification and maintenance of the racking systems and the warehouse safety.
SCL Log provides “expert inspections” using specially designed methodologies and tools.
Inspection reports are signed by qualified engineers and are drawn up to provide clear operational guidelines to ensure the safety of the racks and their proper use.
EXPERTISE AND VALIDATION
The validation is the process ensuring that the racks documentation is complete, consistent and up-to-date. It also certifies their safety for the intended use conditions.
The validation of racking systems is regulated by specific rules in some European countries (UNI 11636 in Italy, UNE 5814 in Spain).
SCL Log provides validation of racking systems and, when necessary, provides technical expertise to integrate the validation documents, certify the rack’s load bearing capacity and the warehouse safety.
SEISMIC CERTIFICATION
The seismic vulnerability analysis of the racks and of the industrial floor integrates the validation process to provide information for the seismic risk assessment of the warehouse.
The SCL Log analysis is based on updated tools and methodologies; the output is the assessment of the seismic vulnerability and the proposal of an upgrading strategy, consisting in:
- design of structural reinforcement solutions;
- selective downgrading of the load-carrying capacity.
The aim is to allow the use of the warehouse with the level of safety demanded by legal requirements and risk analysis.
SPECIFICATIONS, DESIGN AND TESTING
SPECIFICATIONS AND PROJECT SUPERVISION
The supply process of the racking system is supervised in each phase, from design to delivery.
The technical specifications for the racks and warehouse design are the basis for the preparation of the technical specifications of purchase and represent the starting point for the validation and testing activities.
The validation and testing of the supply are based on:
- the verification of the structural design according to the specifications through independent calculations and acceptance tests;
- the validation of the procedure of installation, which is carried out through visual inspections instrumental checks, loading tests and tests on the materials;
- the check of all the certifications and documents attesting the conformity to the specific contractual and national regulations.
The testing documentation issued by SCL Log is signed by qualified engineers enrolled in the Italian National registers.
DESIGN, SUPERVISION AND TESTING OF MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR WORKS
SCL Log provides design services, works management and supervision for the implementation of maintenance, repairs (repairment) and reinforcement of existing racks, in case of:
- restoration of the load-bearing capacity of damaged racks;
- seismic reinforcement or seismic adaptation.
SCL provides "turnkey" solutions supported by specialized contractors.
DESIGN OF RACKING SYSTEMS
SCL Log provides design services, works management and testing of racks and warehouse structures in accordance with International Racking Codes.
SCL Log is worldwide known for its excellence in seismic design in accordance with European and American regulations.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
SCL Log performs research and product development of racking systems with the support of the Materials Testing Laboratory of the Milan Polytechnic for what concerns tests.
SCL Log has implemented methods and tools for test results processing, for the evaluation of the design parameters, and for the provision of components’ design tables and tools.
COMPONENTS TESTS
Design, supervision and re-elaboration of experimental test results on racks components and assemblies.
CERTIFICATION
SCL cooperates with IGQ (Istituto Garanzia Qualità – Institute of Quality Assurance, certified body) as experts in certification, auditing, and inspection of racking systems.
SCL has provided expertise for the following certification protocols:
- shelving according to UNI 11262 (SC15 certification protocol);
- pallet racking according to UNI EN 15512 (SC17 certification protocol, the first officially accredited in Europe).
TRAINING
SCL Log services include training (a training o trainings) on safety, design and validation of racking systems for experts and operators involved in different roles in the warehouse management and operations.
Trainings are provided by SCL or on behalf and in collaboration with training institutions such as IGQ (Istituto Garanzia Qualità – Institute of Quality Assurance, certified body) and Euroconference.
SCL holds:
- Training of PRSES (Person Responsible for Storage Equipment Safety - EN 15635);
- Training of warehouse operators on the safety of storage equipment according to EN 15635;
- Training of “competent person” according to EN 15635 for racking inspections;
- Validation of racking systems (UNI 11636);
- Structural design of pallet racking systems according to EN 15512;
- Seismic design of pallet racks according to EN16681.
BACKGROUND OF SCL TRAININGS
SCL has elaborated trainings starting from 2013 by a team of experienced engineers who participated in the works of the CEN TC344-WG3 that developed the EN 15635 standard until its publication in 2009.
In 2014, after a thorough tutoring activity, IGQ has validated the trainings of PRSES, warehouse operators and “competent person” for racking inspections.
In 2016 the training was included by the AISEM (member of ANIMA) in the Specialized Training program for Qualified Consultants CQ15635.
The training is continuously updated (its current version is 4.0), and it includes the topics of the UNI 11636: 2016 on validations.
The authors of the trainings are experienced engineers active for over 20 years in design, validation, testing and inspections. They also participate in the development of Norms and Standards in UNI, CEN and ERF-FEM Committees.
